With the increasing age of suspension bridges in the US, new solutions are being installed to prolong the life of them, specifically the main suspension cables. At the time of this project, dehumidification systems for suspension bridges were new to the US and had only been installed on one bridge. Advantage Steel and Construction worked with AECOM to test airflow and the dehumidification system on the S. 10th Street Bridge.

Blasted, painted, and repaired the existing ornamental handrail on the 10th Street (Phillip Murray) Bridge sidewalks. Over 2,400 linear feet of ornamental handrail.

On one of the most historic bridges in the city of Pittsburgh, Advantage Steel performed miscellaneous steel repairs, heat straightening, deck repairs, and other miscellaneous repairs throughout the 16th Street Bridge. Advantage utilized phased construction on the roadway, and platform access for underneath the bridge, to complete the work.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed rehabilitation work on one of the “Three Sisters” self-anchored suspension bridges in the city of Pittsburgh. The extensive rehabilitation project included over 400,000 pounds of steel repairs on floor beams, stringers, towers, and truss members. A complete deck replacement was also performed on the 90 year old bridge, requiring extensive construction engineering and temporary support systems.

Fabricated over 150,000 lbs of sidewalk curb plates. Also fabricated temporary support system for bridge tie down.

Advantage Steel, in a joint venture with Brayman Construction, has started rehabilitation work on the second of the "Three Sisters" bridges in the city of Pittsburgh. A similar scope to the 7th Street Bridge, Advantage is performing miscellaneous steel repairs throughout the structure while the deck is replaced and the entire bridge is repainted. The project is scheduled to be completed in August of 2020.

Advantage Steel, in a joint venture with Brayman Construction, has started rehabilitation work on the second of the "Three Sisters" bridges in the city of Pittsburgh. A similar scope to the 7th Street Bridge, Advantage is performing miscellaneous steel repairs throughout the structure, while the deck is replaced and the entire bridge is repainted. The project is scheduled to be completed in August of 2020.

Fabricated a 520 foot long spillway access platform.

Advantage Steel and Construction furnished and installed gusset plate replacements throughout the southbound Bluestone Bridge on the West Virginia Turnpike (I-77). In order to reduce lane closures and impact to the public, unique access was devised to all locations, avoiding lane closures. The project also included replacement of the walkway handrail, pier access ladders, and miscellaneous steel repairs.

Fabricated transition frames totaling over 250,000 lbs, along with splicing over 960 linear feet of sheet connections.

Advantage Steel and Construction had the opportunity to replace an existing through truss railroad bridge over the Mahoning River in Youngstown, Ohio for CSX/Brayman Construction. The complex erection required the new bridge to be constructed just upstream of the existing bridge, which remained in service.

Performed full penetration welds to splice over 30, 78-inch diameter casing pipes.

Advantage Steel & Construction was contracted by the City of Pittsburgh as the prime contractor to perform the fabrication and installation of steel repairs to the E. H. Swindell Bridge.

Advantage Steel and Construction supported and replaced over 167 bearings, under live traffic conditions, on the Genesee River Bridge. Working directly over the Genesee River, temporary support systems were created for all 167 locations, along with performing over 50 beam end repairs on the girders.

A fast paced, 3 month project, Advantage Steel installed and replaced new joints on the Homestead Grays Bridge at night. In addition to the joint work, Advantage performed miscellaneous steel repairs, deck repairs, and other miscellaneous rehabilitation work throughout the bridge.

Working on one of the largest projects ever awarded by the WVDOH, Advantage Steel is performing all of the steel repairs, temporary support, erection, and bearing replacement on 26 bridge structures for Swank Construction. The tentative project completion date is in 2022.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed the erection of over 1,222 tons of steel for the West Virginia Department of Highway over Cheat Lake. The difficult erection required the use of four different cranes, with two being stationed on land and two on the water. Temporary pier brackets were utilized to aid the complex erection at the pier locations. Sectional barges were designed and analyzed to allow for critical picks on the water. The 960 foot long, four span bridge was successfully erected while maintaining full access of the lake to the public.

Advantage Steel and Construction was involved in the construction of the new cable-stayed bridge connecting Ironton, OH and Russell, KY. In addition to the cable-stayed main span, Advantage Steel and Construction played a role in erecting the structural steel approaches, which accounted for over 800 linear feet. There was also a significant amount of temporary support systems, and post tensioning required on the project.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed the erection of 12,100,000 lbs. of structural steel over the Allegheny River. Erection of the multi-girder bridge was performed with land and marine-based crawler cranes. Multiple falsework towers and tie-down systems were installed to stabilize the girders, with haunch girders over 21’ deep and weighing over 150,000 lbs. The main channel span was pre-assembled on sectional barges, which were 60’ x280’ and weighed over 1,050 tons. The barges were then floated into place, and the single unit, weighing over 2 million pounds, was strand-jacked into position to avoid interfering with river traffic.

Fabricated two full galvanized walkway platforms running the entire length of the structure, over 1,600 feet each. Additionally fabricated temporary lifting support for strand jacking over two million pound section of the bridge and drill templates for pier caissons.

Advantage Steel and Construction has completed the erection of the four span steel girder bridge over the Beaver River, CSXT, and NS Railroad tracks. Temporary falsework towers were utilized around the railroad tracks for erection purposes. Conventional erection took place on land and on barges in the water.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed the erection of a five span continuous girder bridge over the Bluestone River. The bridge had an overall length of over 1,200 feet, with the girder depth being 8’-0” deep. Erection was performed both from a causeway and from barges in the river. Temporary support systems were designed to stabilize girders during erection, utilizing the existing bridge.

Advantage Steel and Construction successfully completed the erection of a seven span steel girder bridge over the Monongahela River in two phases. Installation and removal of temporary falsework towers and tie-down systems were necessary for stability during erection in both phases. Critical lifts included 10’ deep girders in excess of 200,000 pounds. Conventional erection was performed on land and in water for both phases of the erection. After completion of both phases, cross frames were installed between the two phases to tie the structures together.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed extensive rehabilitation work on multiple bridges in a small corridor along SR 4003. The difficult steel work all took place around live traffic and in tight work areas. The project included diaphragm and stiffener replacement, along with over 75 bearing replacements.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed rehabilitation and bearing work on the New River Gorge Bridge, one of the most historic bridges in the US, for the WVDOH. A unique jacking system was used to realign the bearings and install keeper bars. An access system was created to reach all points on the 800' high arch to perform miscellaneous repairs across the bridge. Repairs ranged from bolt replacements to concrete deck and joint repairs.

Advantage Steel and Construction was contracted by Norfolk Southern Corporation to perform abutment jacking, concrete repair, pier bearing and knee bracket replacement, removal of masonry stone, and embedded grillage installation. Pier jacking with steel repairs was done, along with South Abutment stiffener replacement. The North Abutment concrete encasement/collar was performed to facilitate new bearing pedestals. The steel piers were repaired and filled with concrete, and bearing modification was also done.

Advantage Steel and Construction was involved in sliding the first bridge into place on the PA Turnpike. Advantage Steel erected the eastbound and westbound bridges over Brush Creek, just south of the existing turnpike bridges. The erection occurred on a temporary support system Advantage Steel designed and made to slide the bridge in to place.

Fabricated all temporary support systems and slide system to support the new bridge, allowing the bridge to be slid and lowered into place.

The design/build rehabilitation of the Rodney Staton Bridge in Wyoming County, WV required extensive structural steel repairs and precast panel installation. Half width construction took place, allowing an 11 foot live lane to be utilized during the duration of the job. Temporary support systems were engineered to repair girders and replace bearings along the 630 foot structure. After completion of the steel repairs, precast concrete panels were installed and adjusted to grade. The concrete panels were then post tensioned in place, becoming the first ever post-tensioned precast deck panel bridge built in the state of West Virginia.

Advantage Steel and Construction performed sidewalk replacement and miscellaneous steel repairs on the only suspension bridge in Pittsburgh, the South 10th Street (Philip Murray) Bridge. Handrails on the bridge were removed, painted, and reinstalled on the project in addition to replacement of the existing sidewalks, with new cast in place grid deck.

A portal was ripped in half on the SR 6 through a truss bridge in Meadville, PA. Advantage steel fabricated installed temporary support systems in multiple locations, replacing portals, and vertical members throughout the bridge. Work was performed in less than a month to open the bridge back up to traffic prior to the required completion date.

Working with Swank Construction, Advantage Steel and Construction replaced 96 bearings, all of which required jacking and temporary support. The project also required over 50,000 pounds of miscellaneous steel repairs.

Fabricated bent temporary supports and jacking brackets for jacking means. Also fabricated new bearing plates, stiffeners, diaphragms, and miscellaneous steel throughout the bridge for rehabilitation.

Advantage Steel & Construction worked on a railroad truss bridge, in the small town of Thurmond , West Virginia. The unique bridge has a vehicular bridge cantilevered off of one side." Tie down and jacking systems were utilized to replace bearings and anchor up to 12' long bearing rods into the piers. Pier encasement's were also performed on two piers and structural steel repairs were completed throughout the bridge.

Advantage Steel & Construction was contracted by WVDOH to rehabilitate the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge.
